Outdoor Fitness For Our Mobile Lives: Sports and Activities

Working out at the gym or heading out for a run are great ways to get in shape, but they may not be everyone’s cup of tea. In fact, there are plenty of other ways to stay fit and have a lot more fun outdoors rather than sticking to the same repetitive routine every day. Participating in outdoor activities is a chance to work out and also enjoy nature, alone or in a group. There are plenty of options to suit all types of personal preferences, ranging from moderate activities, such as fishing, to more intense ones like surfing or mountain climbing. Have a look at some of the suggestions below to find an outdoor activity for you!

Biking and Cycling

Although many people cycle around through the city as an alternative mode of transportation, cycling can also be done for pleasure and fitness in areas such as parks and forest trails. The great thing about biking is that it can be done at one’s own pace and makes for a great cardio workout. It can be done competitively or simply enjoyed at a slower pace in a peaceful area. Apart from purchasing the bicycle, it is also wise to obtain a safety helmet and protective pads for knees, elbows and wrists.

Climbing

Rock climbing can be quite daunting for some, but it is easiest to start out with small steps. Look for a gym or sports club that has an indoor rock climbing wall and learn the basics from there. There are also plenty of outdoor climbing instructors to contact once you feel comfortable scaling an indoor wall. Instructors typically start beginners on easy ascents after ensuring that they are well familiar with all of the harness equipment and safety procedures. Rock climbing is a fantastic workout since it exercises muscle strength throughout the body.

Canoeing

Canoeing can be a very enjoyable activity, both for those who wish to travel along a peaceful river or others who might participate in a race. Canoeing involves strength and coordination and is actually quite easy to learn. It helps to tone muscles and also increase aerobic exercise. As long as the person is properly trained and comfortable in the water, canoeing can be plenty of fun for adults and kids alike.

Fishing

Fishing is a fun activity that can be done to pleasantly while away an afternoon or with the intention of luring some impressive catches. Fishers can cast their lines from the edge of the water, or for a more involved experience, take a boat out onto the water. Even though fishing may appear to be a relatively relaxed activity, serious fishers know that they need to stay in shape in order to fish successfully.

Horseback Riding

Unlike some of the other sports discussed here, horseback riding does require a considerable amount of training and regular practice. Apart from the aerobic component of the exercise, this fun sport also offers riders a chance to considerably tone muscles in the legs, abs, hips and back. Most horseback riding schools typically start off new students in a paddock; while more advanced riders can enjoy a canter along the beach or through the forest. Make sure to buy appropriate riding equipment, such as boots, breeches, and a properly fitted hat, to ensure maximum safety.

Hunting

Physical fitness is a key component in hunting. In order to keep up with the prey, hunters need to be able to walk or run long distances and carry large amounts of equipment through difficult terrain. Many hunters even work out when they are not hunting, in order to make sure that they are up to par.

Kayaking

Kayaking is generally a more intense paddling sport than canoeing. Beginners should start training in calm waters before advancing to challenging situations such as white water rapids. There are plenty of kayak schools where novices can learn the ropes before heading out with a group of friends or a kayak club. Kayakers should be strong swimmers in case of any water emergencies. Like canoeing, kayaking offers plenty of muscle exercise as well as respiratory conditioning, albeit at a greater level.

Sailing

Whether sailing for recreation or competitively, it is important to be in shape and stay fit. Many sailors practice weight lifting and various cardiovascular workouts to ensure that they can manage all of the tasks and equipment aboard a boat. Aerobic workouts are also very helpful to ensure that sailors do not become easily fatigued.

Skiing

Skiing is a very engaging sport that the entire family can participate in. Many ski resorts offer a range of slope difficulty levels so that beginners to pros can find a trail suitable for their skill level. Skiing offers a strong workout for the upper body as well as the lower body, and skiers can switch between aerobic or anaerobic activity depending on the pace they choose. When skiing, one can definitely have a ball and even forget that they are working out in the process!

Surfing

Surfing definitely takes time and practice to master, but once you’re able to successfully stand on the board and ride a wave, it is one of the best feelings in the world! Surfing might simply look like a simple issue of balancing on a board, but it is much more than that. Beginners start by training on the beach before hitting the water. Typically, instructors teach them how to lie flat on the board (this would be akin to lying on the board while paddling further out into the sea) and performing a push-up to vault themselves into a standing position. A few hours of practicing this on land is a strong enough workout before trying it in the water! Surfing helps to develop strong muscle tone in the limbs and chest, and also improves respiratory activity. Most instructors lend a surfboard and wetsuit to students, but eventually you would need to purchase your own equipment.
